In the late 19th century, the Norwegian industry for canned fish products grew rapidly. In the Stavanger region alone, there were over 60 canning factories. To cater to the growing demand for tin cans, Skanem was founded in Norway by Albert L. Barstad, Halfdan Abel Lunde and Robert Paul Richard Scholz as Stavanger Bliktrykkeri og Maskinverksted. The company was later popularly known as ‘Blikken’.
